Berlín guide
Berlin, the capital of Germany with more than 3.7 million inhabitants, is the largest city in Germany and the second largest city in the European Union. It is located in the northeastern part of the country on the river Spree. The long and interesting history of Berlin began as early as the 13th century, when it was founded as a fishing town at the crossroads of trade routes.
After World War II (1945´), Berlin was divided into East and West. This was the political and physical border between the Eastern and Western blocs. This state lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, when the city was reunited.
In Berlin you can visit more than 170 museums, including the unique Museum Island (UNESCO) with five institutions such as the Pergamon Museum, where you can find a reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. The Gemäldegalerie exhibits 3,000 European paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. The theater scene includes the Deutsche Oper and the historic Staatsoper Unter den Linden, which was founded in 1742. The city also has a very lively music and nightlife scene. Here you will find architectural monuments such as the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral and Berlin City Hall. Unfortunately, most of the sights were destroyed at the end of the Second World War.
Berlin has many parks and green spaces, including the famous Tiergarten, which covers an area of more than 200 hectares. Other places of interest are also the Berlin Zoo, Alexanderplatz or the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall.
An important economic and scientific center, Berlin is home to many universities, research centers and companies. In recent years, it has become a center for innovative industries such as start-ups and technology companies. In recent years, Berlin has become an international center for chemical and technological innovation. Recently, a Consortium (chemical concerns Berlin-Chemie AG and Covestro AG and the Berlin Technical University, Free University and Humboldt University) was established here, which deals with the transfer of research results into practice.
